Tournament Decision and Practice
Hey Team,
We have decided to not play the upcoming tournament but are still hoping for May 3rd. Please let me know if you will not be able to play that tournament,
I posted all the possible tournaments that I could find. It would be great if Ty or Larry know about the Mesquite tournaents and can fill us in, that was a fun couple of tournaments we played doown there last year.
We will be having Saturday Morning practice at Snow Park, plan on being there.
Please remember that we will need a copy of birth certificates for the team book, if you have not gotten that to me yet, please do as soon as possible.
See you Saturday!

New Iterim Coach Selected
Coach Larry Garn has offered to help out while we are in transition here. I am sure grateful that we have such a knowledgeable and helpful friend to help us through this transition. He invited anyone with questions or concerns to give him a call. His number is 435-688-8236
Larry will be working on a new full time coach... Which will be addressed at an upcoming practice, there are a few good men he thought could do alot of good.
Change can be hard...but it sure is easier if we all stand together and work as a team to weather the change.
I think we all need to be thinking of something we can do for Shayne to thank him for his time and talent and dedication to our team...if any of you have any ideas, please let me know,
Sherry

On Goal Setting from Stacie
I'm sure somewhere along the line you've come across goal setting and the "rules" that go along with it. In addition to being specific and measurable, some people say goals should also be "realistic". In some ways, that's true, but for the most part I disagree. Let me clarify. If goals are "unrealistic" in the sense that it's physically harmful or just about impossible, then by all means, be more "realistic". Okay, maybe I should use an example. If a 200 lb player sets a goal of losing 50 lbs in 2 weeks, then okay, we need to be more realistic. First of all that's practically impossible. Second, it's dangerous to this player's health to lose that kind of weight in that short period of time. So in that sense, yes, set a goal that's more "realistic" ~ 50 lbs in 6 months. However, when it's a case of, "Oh, you're never going to acheive that, be more realistic" ~ that's when I disagree. Why? Haven't you ever heard of"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you land among the stars"? One difference ~ I have no intention of "missing" when setting my goals. Okay, so back to why I believe in setting goals that are actually a bit "unrealistic". Simple, personal experience. Some of you may have read at www.AllAboutFastpitch.com/CoachingTips.html that I had my first experience with goal setting as a college softball player. Before then I had never written down goals. Honestly, I thought it was a silly exercise. I mean, just because I write it down on paper doesn't mean it's magically going to happen right? As I sat down and gave myself goals as a college athlete, I included things that I thought maybe I'd be able to accomplish someday. For example, I was terrible at hitting the outside pitch when I got to college. Thinking back, I'm amazed it didn't really hurt my offensive output, but I wrote down on my goal sheet that I wanted to be able to hit the outside pitch. Not just get the bat on it, but hit is solidly for a base hit. When I wrote it down, I set it as a long term goal. Something I hopefully would be able to do within the next few years. Guess what? By the beginning of my second year in college, not only could I hit the outside pitch, but I could hit it with power! The same happened for a number of my other goals. These goals that I thought were a bit "unrealistic" ~ Not only did I reach them, I exceeded them. Now I wonder what would have happened if I had set my goals a bit higher. Would I have exceeded them too? Somehow I think so. It's happened time and time again throughout my life. Every time I set a goal thinking "it would be nice if this really did happen", I was able to actually do it and usually in a shorter time frame than originally planned. So every time I heard someone say, "Set realistic goals", I used to secretly disagree. Then earlier this year, I went to a coaches clinic. The person giving the clinic felt the same way I did. It was the first time I ever heard anyone say to set "unrealistic" goals. If you've never done it before, it certainly doesn't hurt to try! "Any system or blueprint for success is better than none at all. Think on paper." --Brian Tracy If you need a Goal Setting Worksheet, you can get one in PDF format at http://www.allaboutfastpitch.com/GSW.pdf Or download a Goal Setting Worksheet in Word Doc format athttp://www.allaboutfastpitch.com/GoalSettingWorksheet.doc After you give this a try and reach those "unrealistic" goals, let me know. I'd love to hear about it! Next time, I'll share some cool clinics I've been able to attend and share with you why I liked them so much. Best wishes to you and have a great day! Sincerely,Stacie MahoeOwner

Saturday Practice
Saturday Practice will be held at Snow Park at 4:00 PM instead of 10:00 AM, due to a tournement that will be held on the fields in the morning.
Larry Garn will be coaching the practices through May. He brings with him great knowledge and has dedicated years to young women, and the game of softball.
We worked on batting this past week, and will work on it again on Saturday...
We look forward to seeing everyone there...

Practice Schedule
The practice game for tonight will not be happening, DARN IT. The good news is we will have a Saturday morning practice, Snow Park at 10:00 AM...
Lets all make every effort to be there.
Another Idea from Allaboutfastpitch:
Weekly Focus is a tool I like to use primarily during pre-season. Basically it's just a simple thing or two for players to keep in mind for the week. Whether you're a coach, parent, or player you can use Weekly Focus. As a coach, what I do is just give the players one or two basic tips to keep in mind as they train that week. Parents can do the same and players can do this on their own as well. For example: 1. Ball first 2. Run on a dropped third strike Throughout the week we may remind them, "Ball first" when they are fielding. Or periodically, we ask them to tell us the two things we want them to remember for the week. As you can see, "ball first" is a simple, basic part of fielding. It's a concept we want them to remember on defense. No matter if they are fielding a ground ball or catching a throw, we want them to remember, "ball first". You can't do anything without the ball. Later during season it becomes a simple verbal cue we can use to get our defense back on track if necessary. "Run on a dropped third strike" is something a player may or may not ever have to do in a game. However, if the situation does arise you want to be able to take advantage of it. Since it doesn't happen all that much at certain levels, there may not be much practice time devoted to it. But it's a bit unfair to expect players to execute something rarely practiced. I found that making it a part of Weekly Focus allows us to emphasize it's importance without taking up a whole lot of practice time. Another thing I like to do with Weekly Focus is turn it into a softball homework assignment. On Monday, we tell players what the Weekly Focus is and they have until Thursday to turn it their assignment. Basically what I want them to do is write down on paper the one or two things we want them to keep in mind for the week. I want it big, bold, and colorful! In otherwords, I want it FUN! I do not want them to do it on a computer. I want them to use their own hands, write in their own way and with their own design. I encourage them to draw pictures or borders on the paper they use. They can use any kind of 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paper (ruled, unruled, colored, white, etc). I wan That's about it for Weekly Focus. Use it as described or make changes as needed to best suit your situation. Have fun! Enjoy your day and always enjoy the game.

What to look for when picking a team for your child.
I am getting emails from Stacie, at allaboutfastpitch...thougth I would share some of her ideas so we can all improve and grow as a team.
Parents, when your look for a team for your child, these can be guideines as far as what to look for in a team or coach. Players, please remember these things when playing. They all apply to you!Coaches, these are great guidelines to refer back to. Stay on track, don't let winning take the place of integrity.Enjoy! The statement "Playing time is earned, not given" is the foundation of this coaching philosophy. Most teams have starters and role players. However, starters should not receive any special treatment. Everyone on the team is expected to put the best interest of the team first, before any thought is given to individual accomplishments. No individual, coach or player, is more important than the team. What specifically does "Playing time is earned, not given" mean? The amount of playing time each player receives will depend on attitude, skill level, and commitment to the team, absences, injuries and game/tournament situations. Team pride is another cornerstone of a competitive athletic program. Winning builds pride, but so does hard work and commitment to individual and team goals. Coaches should instill in each player the belief that hard work pays off, and the harder he/she works, the more they will achieve. While winning is a goal for everyone, at the same time each player should focus on his/her effort - not the outcome. A team can always control its' effort, but seldom the outcome of a game. Teaching and repetition are two of the tools used to prepare each player to be the best softball player he/she can be. Start with fundamentals, work on techniques and individual skills and teach team defense in depth. Take every opportunity to teach and demonstrate teamwork, sportsmanship and respect for everyone, starting with the coaches. Believing that "Perfect practice makes perfect." players should properly practice the skills being taught, on a repetitive basis, so that these skills become as natural as walking and talking. Team members should set goals for themselves and the team. These goals should be challenging enough to require each player to extend beyond present skill level. Each player should have the opportunity to achieve success and/or failure in game situations. When they succeed, give them positive feedback in terms of recognition and approval. When they do not succeed, give them feedback in terms of advice or instruction. Each players primary competition should be on their team, not on the opposing team. Strive for constant competition among pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders. By practicing often with excellent players, each player will have the opportunity to become the best he/she can be. The underlying philosophy is ---- players compete with other players or teams rather than against other players or teams. Mental preparation is as much a part of a coaching philosophy as physical preparation. Try to accomplish through mental preparation: Intensity Exhibit an exceptional focus and concentration. Composure Keep cool under pressure. Enthusiasm Have fun, enjoy the game of softball. Finally, a coaching philosophy should include the fact that playing competitive softball should be FUN. Strive to make practices and games enjoyable experiences that will both develop skills and provide positive life long memories for every player
