Thursday Practice

Thursday Practice in Cedar City from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. We will have your schedule for Friday posted no later than Tuesday. If you have committed to play we need you to follow through with that commitment.  It is very wearing on the coaching staff when we, as families, change our minds after the commitment to play has been made.  So if you said you would be there be sure you are, alot of other girls and families are counting on you too.

If you have a conflict for Thursday practice please let the coach know, it is not on a day that is not typical so if there is a problem it is understandable but if you could be there that would be AWESOME, if you do have a conflict let Mel or Troy know so they can get a head count of who to expect

Less than a week til game time gilrs!!!

The Importance of Goals

The challenge of helping every athlete feel worthy is a difficult one. Adults must find a way for every athlete to experience success in an environment in which actual winners are few and losers are many. The basic problem is that young athletes learn from coaches, teammates, and parents to gauge their self-worth largely by whether they win or lose. The devastating result is that athletes then feel they can only maintain their sense of self-worth by wining.
Some adults also teach young athletes to believe they are entirely responsible for winning or losing a game. This is certainly incorrect. Wining or losing are determined by many factors, not only the play of any one athlete, but also the play of teammates and opponents, officials' calls, and luck.
So when young people learn to evaluate their self-worth according to winning and losing, they do so on the basis of something they do not entirely control. This can lead to athletes' taking credit for success and blame for failure when they are not entirely responsible for either one. Consequently, the most important thing you can do as a parent is to help your child use a different yardstick for success.
Success for an athlete must be seen in terms of exceeding personal goals rather than surpassing the performance of others.
Winning is important, but it becomes secondary to an athlete's striving to achieve personal goals. In baseball, personal goals might include such things as making good contact with the ball when batting, fielding balls correctly, throwing accurately to the base.
By learning to focus on personal goals, goals related to behaviors he or she has control over, your child is much more likely to be successful, regardless of the outcome of a game. The important thing for you here is to help your athlete set realistic goals, for doing so ensures a reasonable degree of success. Given all the competitive pressures and peer influence young athletes face, it is you and the coach who must help your child set realistic goals.
When you help your child set realistic goals, she or he will likely experience more success and feel more competent. By becoming more competent, a child gains confidence and can learn skills of moderate difficulty without fearing failure. So you can see that setting realistic goals robs failure of its threat. Rather than indicating that athletes are not worthy, failure indicates they should try harder.
De-emphasize winning reemphasize the attainment of personal goals. This principle is the key to enhancing your young athlete's feelings of self-worth.

A visit with an olympian

Today the girls that were able to be at the Canyons to meet with Monica Abbott were really lucky. She shared with these young players her experience of representing her country and gave some sage advice on how to handle stress and stay in the moment and to focus on nothing but the task at hand. She talked about not hearing the crowds of seeing anything at all...that the games were in slow motion for her. She encouraged them to learn to let go of negative thoughts and have the discipline to trust themselves in those situations and go on automatic. She talked about the importance of practice and that it is the place to do your work and that you need to work really hard there to be prepared for game situations. That game time is the time to let go and trust yourself.

She also talked to the girls about giving 100% in any commitment they make, to a team, school or other endeavor and that in the end it does not matter if the world tells them that they are awesome or if they tell them they can't do it..all that matters is what they tell temselves . When they look in the mirror they need to know that they have done their very best.
I think my favorite part of team athletics, besides the comradre they offer, is the lessons that my daughter can learn about life...Today she got to learn to do her best and to count on others that are going to do their best to achieve a goal. She was reminded to rely on others and to work hard to be the kind of team mate others can count on. She learned that personal success is attainable, and it often takes many others to achieve a personal goal...and if she can learn to encourage them to be their best and allow them to encourage her, she will atain lofty heights and have the companionship of true friends with her to enjoy the prize.
I loved listening to this young successful athlete share her experience and wisdom with younger athletes. What a fun and meaningful opportunity.

She signed many autographs. I have a few pictures that Kimber's mom will be sending I will add to the site soon.

See you on Monday, at practice...

Reminder on Practice Policy

Since we are working with many new families it was suggested that I post the practice policy for Pegasus so that the newer players would know and the veterans would have a timely reminder.

Practices will be held twice a week, and all practices are mandatory. Girls attendance is recorded and used to determine, in part, the time that they will get to play come tournament time. It is understood that illness and other issues could make an ocassional pracitce impossible to attend. Practice attendance can be excused by the coaching staff at their discression. An excused practice must include a call prior to the practice being missed. Coach Mel's number: 531-0846

Girls are not only expected to attend their pracitces regularly, but are expected to participate for the entire practice. Because how they practice is how they will play in games it is important that all the girls give 110% for the entire pracitce. Attitude, and effort are assessed by the coaching staff as well.

On occassion the coaches do assign homework to the girls and when they are asked to work on something at home that is also expected....sometimes they will be asked to work on a specific softball skill, a batting drill or a defensive exersize may be assigned. Sometimes goals will need to be set by the girls and they may need to report to one of their coach's on their progress.

This week the girls are asked to have a personal goal set and to create a practice jersey on a white tee shirt for themselves. The only parameter is that the shirt be white and that it have Pegasus written on the front of it... This should be a fun assignment. Lets see what the girls come up with. It will also help the girls have some more unity if they are wearing a shirt that supports their team, and not a high school or other logo.

If anyone would like to order some tee shirts with a pegasus logo and also the original practice jerseys for the new players could be ordered (most of the team already has one) they will run between 10 and 15 dollars depending how many I order...we can get them in all sizes for the girls or for their parents and siblings. We can also order hoodies or hats and visors let me know what, if anything you would like.

I am excited about the new girls and the energy and spirit they bring with them. What a great group of girls we have! It is fun to see the girls grow together as a team...I am grateful for a coaching staff that is so dedicated, not only to the skills and plays these girls need to learn,  but also to team building that will serve our daughters so well in life! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns...

"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."

Is winning everything?

Here is my friend Stacie on that subject.

I know you've probably heard the saying, "Winning isn't everything. It's the ONLY thing." Honestly, I've never cared much for it. It may sound good as a "slogan" and it may be a little motivational and look cool on t-shirts and stuff. But the truth is, it's totally and completely FALSE.Of course, you may or may not agree with me, but in my world, that saying just never really connected with me for a number of reasons. I was reminded of why I feel this during the course of this softball year.
IF winning truly was everything OR the "only" thing then, technically, there would be no gripes and no grumbles when a championship was won. Everyone that had anything to do with the championship team (parent, fan, player, coach) would be utterly and completely happy and overjoyed if winning really was the ONLY thing. No one on a championship team would have any sort of ill feelings about anything related to the team or the season or the coaching or the players or the organization if winning was the ONLY thing. But that's not the case.
Even when a team wins a championship there are situations when players or parents are not completely happy and satisfied with how the season/tournament went. Why? BECAUSE THERE IS MORE TO THIS GAME, TO THIS ExPERIENCE, THAN WINNING!
Don't get me wrong. Winning is great! Championships are awesome! Any time I step on the field I'm out there to outdo my opponent and come out on top. But these things are not the end all/be all of being involved with this sport. I'm sure you'll run into coaches or parents or players who've had "successful" seasons tainted by something that happened during the season (the way a situation was handled, the way the players were treated, the way the coaches acted, the lack or organization of the season, etc, etc, etc). You will probably also meet people from time to time who will tell you that they've experienced a higher level of enjoyment and fulfillment in seasons where their record wasn't necessarily the best. If winning where "everything" OR the "only thing" that wouldn't be possible, it would never be true. But it is. Maybe not always, but it certainly is true and does happen on occasion.......because in this game, in any sport, in life....winning is NOT everything NOR is it the only thing.
When all is said and done, I wouldn't want people to remember me only for the championships I've been a part of, but hopefully also for positive qualities like integrity, honestly, determination, inspiration, etc. In fact, if they could know me for either championships OR those positive qualities - I would want them to remember me for having those positive qualities. If I had to choose between being known as a coach with those positive qualities and no championships OR a coach with championships and but little integrity, little honesty, and little inspiration - I don't think I have to tell you which scenario I'd choose. What a shame it would be to be known for a championship or two and nothing else.
Winning isn't everything nor is it the only thing.

Anything can happen...to team USA or the toughest team in your bracket...KNOW YOU CAN

Japan has won the Gold Medal for this year's Olympics games. I didn't get a chance to watch, but will definitely be reviewing the recording I have of the game. I knew it would be a tough game, just like the one they had in the earlier rounds, but I still thought Team USA would come out on top.

A Special Invitation

A special invitation has been extended from Adidas to all of the Pegasus Softball players in the organization.

On Sunday, August 24th at the end of the top 100 event being held at the Canyons softball complex our girls have been invited to meet and listen to Monica Abbot talk about her recent olympic experience. She will have her medal in hand...this is a wonderful opportunity for the Pegasus players. They are expecting the tournament to end between 2 and 3 pm, at that time the girls will be invited to go and talk with Monica...

Also, there will be the top 100 high school seniors accross the country participating in this tournament. Top college coaches will be there watching the girls and doing some recuiting for their teams...Anyone is welcome at the canyons on Saturday and Sunday during the regular game time to observe.

The invitation for the visit with Monica Abbot is only extended to the pegasus players..I am so excited.

You are all welcome to attend if you are interested. I would bring something for the girls to have autographed.

Good Advice for players

Another thought for you from tournament weekend...we'll cover the hustle part before I get to the "guts" part.

ALWAYS hustle down the line after you hit the ball, NO MATTER WHAT.

However you hit the ball, strong or weak, fair or foul ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS hustle down the line.

It's your second weapon in an at bat. First, you hit the ball, then you RUN like heck!

The defense needs to first defend your hit THEN beat out your hustle. Your first strike is the hit you put on the ball, you "attack" again by running your FASTEST to put as much pressure as you possibly can on the defense AND to make them PAY if they make a mistake.

I saw too many girls, including my own daughter, slow down before first base. Granted some of them were already out by the time they were within a few steps of the base, but I believe all players should run all hits out at their best speed no matter what. If they're able to slow down and stop before the base on a ground out to the left side, they probably weren't running their hardest. Some are slowing down before the bag and are only out by a step or two, that's just not the way to play. Imagine if these players had been hustling down the line, they could have rushed a throw, they could have shaken up the 1b to possibly mishandle the ball because they were right there - you never know, RUN LIKE HECK after you hit the ball.

Then there was another situation when a girl popped up soooooo high, she should have been standing on 2nd when the ball popped out of the SS glove. Instead, she's dogging it and almost gets caught in a pickle between 1st and 2nd because she wasn't going hard. She was just trotted around 1st and then, bam, the ball pops out of the SS glove and now she's in no man's land between bases not even at top speed. Seriously, she would have made 2nd easy if she had run as hard as possible from the get go. She hurt her team by giving less than her best. I didn't stay at that field to see what happened after that, but it's quite possible that her team had to give up an out to move her to 2nd, a base she could have had "free" if only she gave her best effort after her mis-hit rather than pouted and felt sorry for herself. Team players, and players giving their best effort, never give up on a hit. If you're giving up on hits, if you have players that are, it's time do to a self check and step up your game because you're selling yourself short.

Thoughts from Fastpitch on Tournaments

One awesome thing about tournaments is just seeing the girls do big things, get good hits, make great plays, accomplish things others may not have thought they could. Then when you have the top two teams in the end have to take it to the "if necessary" game, what more could you ask for? That's some great softball! Couple tournament thoughts in my mind right now:Yelling at umpires and insulting them isn't going to score you any brownie points with them and is unlikely to help your teamYou really should apply sunscreen more than once per day (I'm a bit toasted) Having more than one pitcher is always great, but more than one catcher is also something you need to be prepared with for long tournament daysHydration is sooooooo important and easy to overlook when your in the "heat" of the momentToo many deserving girls get left without a team because coaches are trying to pull "the best" girls together from different teams to create a "hammer" team and these players' original teams are left in shambles (with not enough players) while coaches of the "new" teams (often times dads) don't ask them to play
When coaches start putting winning above all else, things can get real ugly real quick and the GIRLS are the ones who get the short end of the stickWhen you see a well coached team, it's obvious - when you see a team with coaches who don't have their stuff together, it's equally obviousPlayers often save their coaches butts! When something is working, it really shouldn't be changed
I'm sure there's more floating around in my head, but I think that's enough for now

Permission form for tomorrow's team building ROPES course

Thanks to all the girls who showed up to practice tonight, we had 9 girls in attendance, my favorite part was watching sliding practice...Great job Sam on getting down and dirty. Can't wait to see the girls on the bases in September,  and thanks to Randy Simkins for letting us use his fields!

Please meet in the SUU tennis court parking lot no later than 9:45, lateness will cause others to be inconveneinced, being on time is essential for this activity. Please print the attached form and have it filled out with your daughter in the morning, she will also need $5.00 cash and water bottle...This is a rare and exciting opportunity for the girls to work on team building, trust and counting on each other.  Please make every effort to have your daughter there, the ones who are not, will really miss out.

Practice Reminder

PRACTICE IN ST GEORGE 7 PM FRIDAY NIGHT AND TEAM BUILDING AT SUU ON SATURDAY MORNING AT 10 AM

REMEMBER YOU NEED $5.00 AND YOUR PERMISSION FORM ON SATURDAY!

Good Player or Great Player ~ Aug. 15, 2008AllAboutFastpitch.com Many softball players can hit, throw, and catch, but what separates the great players from the others? Here are a few things players should keep in mind. Consistently Good or Inconsistenly Great? Some players make oustanding plays every once in a while (diving stops, leaping catches, etc), but then turn around and fail to make routine plays. As a coach I tell players that I don't need them to be great sometimes and lousy the rest of the time. I need them to be "good" most of the time. I want them to be a "sure thing" on routine plays. Keep the routine, routine. If the big plays come, great! But I need the routine plays to be made. Lets start off at being consistently "good" and work toward consistently "great". Are you pushing every day?Even if you are the best softball player in your entire league, there are probably still improvements that can be made. Don't be satisfied with doing enough to get by just because that's already better than most or possible because you're already better than everyone on your team. Even if you are the best defensive player on your team or even in your league, that doesn't mean there aren't other areas you can improve in. In fact, you can probably become an even better defensive player by increasing speed to cover more ground, improving throwing accuracy, or increasing agility so that your footwork is even quicker and sharper. Guess what, even if you are the best player in your state, there are 49 other girls in this country who are also the best player in their state! So even if your already one of the best, don't sell yourself short by simply going through the motions in practice. Keep pushing every day in every drill to see how much better you can get. Can you put aside personal differences? You may not like every person on your team, but great players know how to set those feelings aside when they step on the field. If you can't do that, you are not supporting your teammates 100%. If you aren't supporting every teammate 100% and backing them up in everything you do on the field, then you are NOT contributing all you can to your team. Softball is NOT an individual sport. Team unity on the field is such a great asset. Do you contribute to giving your team this unity? I've had teammates that couldn't stand each other off the field, but on the field you'd never know it. Don't let your personal feelings get in the way. Difference between practice time and game time? The head coach I coach with always says that they only difference between practice and games is the color of your uniform/what you're wearing. You should train with the same intensity and focus that you'd have in a big game. By the same token, don't be a "gym fighter"/the best "practice" player in the world. Some players perform awesome in practice, but come game time, they can't get the job done. What good is that? I once had a coach that told me I was a "gamer". She said that watching me in practice was nothing special, but come game time, "Wow!" I didn't think I did anything different in practice than I did in the game, but now that I think about it, maybe that's just it. I was able to do in a game just about everything that I did in practice. Often times great plays or great hits are no better or greater than anything you've done in practice. What makes those plays great is the situation in which they happen. Someone once told me that I was the hero of the game because I hit a ground ball. When I heard that I was thinking, "Give me break, anyone can hit a ground ball, that doesn't make me a hero." But the second baseman missed this routine ground ball I hit. It then got by the right fielder as well allowing myself and a baserunner to score the only runs of a championship game on that one hit. If I had had a line shot base hit, then maybe I'd be able to accept that "hero" label a bit better, but still, it's just a hit. Was my ground ball an awesome hit? No, it was just a ground ball, but being able to make something happen in that situation made me look like a "hero". When I think back, none of the "big plays" I made where anything all that spectacular, but being able to get the job done when it counted was what made those plays special. Don't forget "It's Just a Ground Ball." Don't pressure yourself out. Keep your cool and make the play you've made many many times before, but do it consistently and come through when your team needs you! --------------------

Equipment needed

We are running low on softballs and are in need of new catching equipment. Please consider who you may know that could sponsor the team and help us with these extra expenses it would help us keep costs down for team parents. In the meantime...if you can bring a couple of balls to add to the buckets it would help out...if you would prefer to donate cash...I can run to the store and buy the balls for you...

I never compete against the competition. The only one I compete against is myself, because one day I will beat the competition and then who will I compete against?

Payson Field address for this weekend

Our First game will be on the lower field located at 800 S and 800 W, Payson, UT Meet the team at 10:30 AM Please be prompt, it is scary for the coaches when they don't see your shining faces.

I am also giving you the upper field address in case you want to google both we may have games on that field, as well.

The upper field is located at 935 S main street

Remember we need some seat belts to get the girls up there, please let me know

Rides Needed

Hey we have some girls that are going to be in need of rides up and back from Payson this weekend. Please let me know if you have room in your car, so we can be sure that everyone arrives safely.

I so appreciate how much support you each are to the team...it takes a village to play a softball tournament doesn't it?

If you can help email me back...

This Weekend

We will play our first game at noon on Thursday, August 7th, against Devestation.  Girls will need to arrive on the field by 10:30.Coach has not given me the field location but this gives you an idea about what plans you should make regarding whether you want to travel on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Coach Mel has a room for Thursday night at the Comfort Inn in Payson, if anyone else wants to get a room at the same location it is close to all the fields we could be using for this tournament.

If anyone has any questions, let me know. I will have the field directions posted as soon as I get them.

We need all the girls that committed to playing to show up for the weekend...
